Serra Gelada Natural Park

The natural park of Serra Gelada covers a total of 5,653.92 hectares, of which 4908.95 in the marine area and 744.97 in the municipalities of Benidorm, l'Alfàs del Pi and Altea. The park protects the whole of the sierra and three emblematic islets: the Illot de la Mitjana, the Illot de Benidorm and the Illots de l'Olla y la Galera. The Serra Gelada is formed by a relief that rises abruptly on the flat of Benidorm, l'Alfàs del Pi and Altea, and gives rise, on its coastal front, to cliffs of more than 300 meters. Its name, Sierra Helada, is given not only by its orientation, which creates a cooler microclimate, but also by the optical effect produced by limestone as the light reflects on it on moonlit nights. It shelters redoubts of vegetation of an exceptional value: in one of its slopes abounds the Mediterranean forest and in the slope that gives to the sea, species able to support saline soils and the abrasive effects of the wind, between which the fossil dune hangs out. In the marine area, there are oceanic Posidonia and Vermétido meadows and, as far as fauna is concerned, its main wealth is seabirds.
